Let's face it, there are few things better than a good old South African braai and enjoying the great outdoors with family and friends. There are also few things better than exploring the best of the countryside in a true leisure lifestyle vehicle. Mahindra is a brand which has been synonymous with offering vehicles which are rugged, tough and feature packed, all while remaining incredibly good value for money at the same time. I was therefore very excited when I was offered the opportunity to spend the December holiday period enjoying the all-new Pik-Up Doublecab 4x4.

This S10-badged flagship model, which I spent time exploring, features modern LED "eyebrow inspired slashes" above the headlights. The nose of the vehicle also features enhanced lines and an overall smoother, more lifestyle based appearance than that of its predecessor.

The Pik-Up is based on Mahindra's Scorpio range of vehicles and as a result features a more bold, work-horse inspired design, but does all of this coupled with some neat lines, which very much point at a more leisure lifestyle inspired market. The inclusion of 16-inch alloys further adds to its improved image.

Perhaps the most notable changes when comparing the previous generation Scorpio Doublecab to the all-new Pik-Up can be found in terms of the vehicles interior and creature comforts. To start things off, the interior is an elegant blend of dark materials with a spattering of satin-silver accents to further enhance the style.

Further to the softer more impressive materials and comfort of the cabin, comes the inclusion of a colour touchscreen display located at the centre of the dash. The Multimedia system is not quite as snappy as some on the market, however, it remains easy to operate and features a wide variety of media sources including, Bluetooth (Phonecall and Media), USB and Auxiliary.

The inclusion of soft, fold-down armrests, help make the seating comfortable for front passengers, while the wealth of headroom height, helps make the cabin feel very large and spacious overall.

The new Pik-Up is powered by Mahindra's 2.2-litre mHawk turbodiesel engine which features variable turbocharging geometry. It develops 103 kW at 3 750 rpm and 320 Nm of torque from only 1 600 rpm. Owing to the love revs at which the torque is developed, the engine remains generous on power at both take-off speeds and when the vehicle is put under more pressurising off-road situations.

Mahindra claims a combined cycle fuel consumption figure of a mere 7.9L/100 km for this model, which compares well with similarly powered engines from its closest competitors in terms of offer and price, namely the GWM Steed and JMC Vigus. With its large 80-Litre fuel tank, the range is impressive and during the December test period, I managed to average 9.6L/100km.

The Pik-Up Doublecab is designed to be used both on and off-road. Being a leisure lifestyle vehicle and work-horse in one, comprises of a vehicle being able to strut its stuff, whenever required. With its 245/75 16-inch tyres, generous 210 mm ground clearance and pliant suspension set-up, the Pik-Up performs overall well when on the road, but just wait until you take it off-roading.

A simple rotary selector at the centre of the cabin, allows you to select either 2H, 4H or even 4L depending on the surface, and the impressive ride height makes light work, no matter the surface.

The Pik-Up really manages to combine work-horse capability, improved styling and in true Mahindra style proper value for money motoring. It impressed on many levels over my extended holiday test period.
